 Collaborative Justice Courts:

  • Use a combination of treatment and accountability to compel and support drug-using offenders to change their lives.
  • Are widely applied to adult criminal cases, juvenile delinquency and truancy cases and family court cases involving parents at risk of losing custody of their children due to  substance abuse.
  • Significantly reduce drug abuse and crime and do so at far less expense than any other justice strategy.
  • Improve communities by successfully getting offenders (parents, juveniles, adults, veterans, homeless people, and mentally ill individuals) clean and sober and stopping drug-related crime.
  • Are effective because of a multi-phase treatment program combined with frequent court appearances and expectations for completion.

 There are no government or foundation grants that address the personal needs of children, individuals and families involved in collaborative justice courts in California.

  •  Because collaborative justice court participants lack material means due to almost universal poverty, lack of personal support systems able or willing to help, and gaps in existing community resources, the CA Collaborative Justice Courts (CCJC) Foundation was established.
  • The CCJC Foundation exists to facilitate the acquisition of contributions to local collaborative justice courts to be used to meet unique, unfunded needs of  participants       striving to satisfy program requirements.
  • The CCJC Foundation makes it possible to provide small grants, in the range of $50 to $250, to participants to help meet needs relevant to their success in their programs.
  •  Local Advisory Boards are established in jurisdictions with collaborative justice court programs to raise money and oversee its distribution to participants.
  •  These grants will make a significant difference in the success of the participant.  Small grants that can make a big difference may include:

  *  Removal of inappropriate tattoos

*  Mandatory GED testing fees

*  Bus passes, bicycles and helmets for those who have lost their drivers’ licenses to assure attendance in    treatment services

*  Dental work to replace teeth destroyed through use of methamphetamine

  • When one person rises out of drugs and crime, the entire community is the better for it.  The CCJC Foundation partners with California’s collaborative justice courts to maximize the likelihood of this success

Mendocino County’s Local Advisory Board is making this happen.  You can also for your local jurisdiction.

Mendocino County’s experience…

We have provided funds for such items as school fees, driver’s license renewals, rent and utility deposits, car tires, bus passes, bicycle repair, cell phone minutes, health club coupons and tattoo removal.   Although the grants are not large in their amount, they are giant in the lives of the participants who are so appreciative of people believing in them and providing support.  Members of the Advisory Board are rewarded each month by being part of giving badly needed funds to those who are engaged in the difficult task of recovery.
