FROM JUDGE CINDEE F. MAYFIELD, Mendocino County Superior Court

Speaking of small miracles, I saw a former Juvenile Drug Court participant in Family Court yesterday (this is actually a fairly common occurrence).  What made this hearing special is that this very bright, strong willed 24 year old had finally turned her life around.  Her 3 year anniversary of obtaining her sobriety will occur in 2 weeks.

She was in court to obtain guardianship of her transgender 14 year old brother because their Mom was still using and had no tolerance for her son’s life style. It was quite heartening to read all the glowing letters or recommendation for this young lady.

In some corner of my heart, I know that she wanted me to be proud of her achievements because of the quasi-parental role I played for so many years as she was growing up.  It is nice to see occasional success in the midst of the chaos.
